Erica Jong's Quotes

Fear of Flying, 1973.

  • I want you. I want you. I want you. Anything to avoid saying: I love you.
  • Silence is the bluntest of blunt instruments.

How to Save Your Own Life, 1977.
  • All people believe their suffering is greater than others.
  • Inevitably, I drank too much, talked too much, smiled too hard, swallowed back too much bile.
  • The worst thing about jealousy is how low it makes you reach.
  • Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn't...
  • Loving someone is a loss of freedom -- but one doesn't think of it as loss because one gains so much else.
  • Photographs... are the most curious indicators of reality.

La Vie En Rose

"La Vie en rose", Life through rose-coloured glasses (literally Life in pink), was the signature song of French singer Édith Piaf. An oldie, but a goodie. Edith Piaf's amazing voice makes you feel like you're strolling through the streets of Paris on a romantic evening.

I first knew this song when I watched this remake movie "Sabrina" - starred by Julia Ormond, Harrison Ford back in 1995. Then when I lived in Germany, some of my French friends (specifically: Robin Le Barbier et Adrien Guinemer-Langlois - Bonjour messieurs, ca va? Je vous manque tous les deu!) always sing this song. Always. Then my craze for Audrey Hepburn began... I have been immediately drawn into the beautiful melody followed by the slightest whisper of words until this very moment. I don't think I will ever be bored with this song :)

And this is the original version by Edith Piaf.

And here are two of my favorite covers of the song (I totally love the girl with ukulele --- I want an ukulele and learn how to play!)

Currently Loving

  1. Books: Rick Riordan is really doing it for me these days. I really enjoy Riordan's style and simplicity yet incredibly interesting.
  2. Anything to do with Greek and Egyptian history. This really isn't new for me, but since I read Rick Riordan's books, it's become a much bigger love!
  3. Striped shirts. The horizontal stripes are the best, in navy or black, thick or thin. I can't stop wearing them.
  4. Obsessing over desserts: cheesecakes, fruit tartlets, lemon cakes, chocolate fudge cakes.
  5. Songs by Lisa Ono, Sara Bareilles, She & Him (this is my neverending love), Ingrid Michaelson, Zee Avi (thanks to lil miss tatoulla), Melody Gardot, Meaghan Smith, Lucy Schwartz, Lisa Ekdahl, Lenka, Alison Krauss and Kate Nash. Their songs are on shuffle mode ;)

Baby It's Cold Outside

Do yourself a big favor and download Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey's version of "Baby It's Cold Outside" and Zooey Deschanel and Leon Redbone's version on the same song! Which one do you like better? I can't pick either one, I love Zooey and Leon's old tunes and melody yet I love Jessica and Nick's modern pop tunes. Note: I don't particularly like Jessica Simpson, she's a dumb blonde I say. But she's really good in this song. I WANT WHITE CHRISTMAS NOW NOW NOW...

Shangri-La "It's in Our Nature"

This has got to be my favorite tv commercial ever! According to Shangri-La representative, the music is an original composition created for this TV commercial, by Bruno Coulais, a composer renowned for his music on film soundtracks. The composition was recorded by members of the Paris Opera Orchestra, especially for Shangri-La. Anddd... based on a true story! How wonderful <3

Sweet Sixteen

People often look back on their life and remember another time when life seemed so good. Selective memories are a common human trait. To be more selective, let's go back to where we were sixteen. because well most people had their good life when they were sixteen. Do you remember what it's like being sixteen? I remember only to vividly what it was like being sixteen and I probably wouldn't want to re-live it. When I was sixteen, I think I would have been completely and sublimely happy if some cute boys liked me and I get to hang out with my friends everytime and simply being rebellious and secretive and feeling too cool for school *lol* But I do know that I had great fun back then, being carefree all the time and hoping for a great future ahead.

Few weeks ago I stumbled upon interesting articles of some sixteen years old sailor, Abby Sunderland. Have you heard about Abby Sunderland? She’s sixteen and going around the world on a sail boat by herself. The scariest thing I did when I was sixteen was skipping school by jumping out my school's prison-like-walls. It was really fun. For me, it was funner than taking eight months away from friends and sailing around the world alone. But different strokes for different folks.

Meet Abby Sunderland from Californa, USA. She's sixteen, prepared herself for 3 years before sailing solo. Born in a family who likes sailing, be the youngest sailor who travels solo around the world was her dream. On January 2010, this brave teenage sailor departed Cabo San Lukas - Mexico with her boat, Wild Eyes, a 40-foot sloop built in 2001to fulfill her dream.

Until one day in June, Abby was feared lost at Indian Ocean. She sailed into storm and managed to survive until unexpectedly a 30 feet rogue wave hit her boat and turned it upside down. Then Abby manually activated two emergency beacons shortly after, while the safe and rescue team worked immensely hard to find her, she waited floating in the Indian Ocean for 48 hours. In the middle of nowhere. I'm pausing right here for a moment. What would you do if you were in her shoes? How would you feel?

Then they found her within 48 hours and saved her life. After experiencing that horrendous event, I would obviously call it quits. But Abby hasn’t deflated her drive to sail around the world, she said, "I’m definitely going to sail around the world again, or at least give it another try."

So, I write to tell not only the youth, but also everyone for that matter to follow the examples displayed by Abby. Find a dream, and chase that dream. Find the courage within you to go above and beyond to achieve that goal. Turn off the “tube” and quit watching bad actors interact. Instead, interact with the interesting, very real people around you. And, don’t just sit around imagining what you may become — go out and become that person. I praise Abby for chasing her dreams and goals, and attempting such a difficult challenge. I wish her the best in all of her endeavors, and look forward to the day when she does sail around the world.

These are photos Abby took while chasing her dream then posted to her facebook page. I simply found them, extraordinary! Bravo Abby!

Individual Awards at South Africa 2010

On the day of the Final, the FIFA World Cup™ Trophy outshines everything and everyone else. For the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup, Spain have laid hands on the most prized trophy in football. But away from the cup itself, a number of outstanding players have been recognised with individual awards.

adidas Golden Ball: Diego Forlan (Uruguay)
adidas Silver Ball: Wesley Sneijder (Netherlands)
adidas Bronze Ball: David Villa (Spain)

adidas Golden Boot: Thomas Muller (Germany) - 5 goals, 3 assists
adidas Silver Boot: David Villa (5 goals, 1 assist)
adidas Bronze Boot: Wesley Sneijder (5 goals, 1 assist)

adidas Golden Glove: Iker Casillas (Spain)

Hyundai Best Young Player: Thomas Muller (Germany)

FIFA Fair Play Award: Spain
Spain have ended the tournament as both the best team in the world, and the fairest too: coach Vicente del Bosque's men collected only eight yellow cards in the course of the tournament. Korea DPR actually finished with just two yellow cards against their players, but the Asian side only played three matches at the finals. The FIFA Fair Play Award for Spain arguably comes as little surprise in the light of the fair play ratings from 2006, when the Spaniards and Brazil finished joint top.
